populi Italiae, e Sabinorum agro profecti, quoniam ductu auspiciôque Pici iter ingressi erant (quam avem Marti sacram credidêre veteres) hinc Picenorum nomen deinde nacti, ut ait, Strabo, regionem hanc prius incoluêre Pelasgi. Huic Marchiae Anconitanae nomen, a Longobardis, ortum, qui post excessum Narsetis, Italiâ totâ occupatâ, romani imperii funditus extirpandi consilium coeperunt, et magistratuum veterum formas novis turbârunt institutis. Ita suam dominationem in senas divisêre praefecturas. Quaternae Ducatus appellabantur, erantque Beneventanus, Spoletinus, Foroiuliensis et Taurinus: binae Marchionatus, nimirum Anconitanus et Taruisinus. Picenum itaque Longobardi Marchiam dixêre, et Anconitanam, ab Ancone oppido quod in eo, tamquam nobilissimo praecipuoque universae, Marchiones sedem ac domicilium habere solebant. Regioni huius limites sunt, ad Orientem, Praecutini populi, cum Truento amne; ad meridiem Sabini, Vilumbri, Umbri Ducatus Spoletini gentes cum Apennino; ad Septentrionem, sinus Adriaticus; ad occasum, Gallia Togata, nunc Romanula, cum Isauro amne. Urbes habet praecipuas, Pisaurum, Fanum Fortunae, Senam Gallicam, Urbinum, Camerinum, Asculum, ipsamque Anconam a Syracusanis, Dionysii tyrannidem fugientibus conditam.
